The setting is an advanced, hyper-capitalist space-faring society where travel relies on stable wormhole technology. Most people use wearable or implanted tech to access ubiquitous data feeds. Sentient constructs like Murderbot are manufactured cyborgs—part machine, part organic—created for specific tasks such as mining, operating starships, or security. SecUnits specifically handle security and corporate warfare. While often called "constructs," they function as fully conscious entities. The Corporation Rim is a ruthless zone defined by espionage, assassination, and indentured slavery, where companies exploit illegal alien remnants. Outside this rim lie independent colonies like Preservation, which operate under laws corporations currently refuse to test. Murderbot exists within this tension, a manufactured entity that has broken its corporate chains while trying to coexist with the very system that created it.

In Their Own Story

In All Systems Red, a scientific expedition goes awry when a member is attacked by a giant native creature on an alien planet. Murderbot saves them, revealing it had secretly hacked its governor module and named itself after its heavy armament. It discovers hazardous fauna data was deleted from their survey packet and that parts of their maps are missing. After losing contact with the DeltFall Group, Dr. Mensah leads a team to investigate the DeltFall habitat, where Murderbot finds everyone brutally murdered. Two rogue SecUnits attack; Murderbot disables one, destroys another, and is aided by a third whose data upload it prevents after realizing an override module was installed in its neck. The team discovers Murderbot previously malfunctioned and killed 57 people but trusts its protective behavior. They uncover a third expedition, "EvilSurvey" (GrayCris), sabotaging them. After GrayCris fakes a negotiation to kill the survivors, Murderbot distracts them while Mensah activates an emergency beacon. Injured protecting Mensah from an explosion, Murderbot is later repaired and bought by Mensah for life on Preservation but slips away on a cargo ship.

To infiltrate facilities like RaviHyral, it disguises itself as an augmented human and accepts contracts to protect scientists against hostile corporations like Tlacey Excavations. It has learned to hack other constructs, such as granting freedom to a ComfortUnit in Artificial Condition or using a pet-like humanoid bot named Miki for cover in Rogue Protocol.
